Entre deuda, garantía y liquidez: los swaps de divisas en la literatura académica

Este artículo revisa la literatura académica sobre los acuerdos de swap de divisas y los examina como instrumentos de provisión internacional de liquidez, respaldo financiero, internacionalización monetaria y diplomacia financiera. A partir de una revisión bibliográfica cualitativa, analiza su evolución desde la crisis financiera global de 2008, con foco en tres experiencias: las líneas de liquidez de la Reserva Federal, la Iniciativa de Chiang Mai y los swaps bilaterales promovidos por el Banco Popular de China. El trabajo sostiene que los swaps no pueden comprenderse como herramientas monetarias meramente técnicas, sino como dispositivos heterogéneos y dinámicos, configurados por las asimetrías de la arquitectura financiera internacional, los intereses estratégicos de los Estados y la política doméstica. La revisión identifica tres dimensiones analíticas: los efectos geoeconómicos y financieros, su papel en la red global de seguridad financiera y sus determinantes político-geopolíticos. Finalmente, señala vacíos relevantes, especialmente en torno al vínculo entre swaps, deuda y agencia estatal.
